William Russell Owen, of Macon,
Georgia, will deliver the com¬
mencement address; Dr. James
Allen Smith, of Knoxville. Tenn.,
will preach the commencement
sermon; Dr. David G. Lyon, of
.Harvard University, and famous
Journalism “Ptof”

Perkins J. Prewitt, city editor of
The Birmingham News, and Pro¬
fessor of Journalism in Howard
College, haa-recently resigned from
his position with the News to be¬
come managing director of the Bir¬
mingham Safety Council. He will
take up his ne v duties March 18.
The change will not affect his
teaching at Howard, however, more
than a possible change in the peri¬
od of his class. Mr. Prewitt has
been in the newspaper profession
14 years, six of which he has been
city editor of the News. He has
had newspaper experience on The
News-Scimitar of Memphis, Globe-
Democrat, of 8t. Louis. *rhe Geor¬
gian, of Atlanta, The Register, of
Mobile, and the old Birmingham
Ledger. He is considered an au¬
thority In journalism throughout
the Sohth.
Mr. Prewitt is also a graduate of
Mississippi A. and M. College. He
has already been signed to teach
in Howard next year.

PAIGN.
As was promised, something unus¬
ual in the way of a Glee Club pro¬
gram was staged Friday night in the
college auditorium by the recently or¬
ganized Girls’ Glee Club under the
direction of Pat Alderman. An ap¬
preciative audience of about four hun¬
dred were well entertained throughout
the program which began at 8:16 and
lasted two hours.
This was the first concert of the
season given by the song lassies and
was considered a great success for the
club. It was received with loud ap¬
plause and several encores.
The program opened with a vocal
eolo, “Roses of Picardy," by Miss
Nannie B. Chandler, with the club
joining her in the chorus. Then fol¬
lowed the solos, “I’m Waiting For
Ships That Never Come Home," by
Jean Gillespie; “That Old Gang of
Mine,” by Waldlne Mason; “ When
Clouds Have Vanished,” by Julia
Finklea; “Love Sends n Little Gift of
Roses,” by Nannie B. .Chandler.
Intermingled with the serious songs
were humorous and negro melodies by
Sarah Faucett, Clementine Allen. Sue
Sargent and Evelyn Clark. These

The total amount collected In the
five year period for missions and edu¬
cation was $68.575,819.60. Of this
amount slightly more than $20,000,000
was added to the equipment and en¬
dowment funds of the 117 Baptist pre¬
paratory schools and colleges In the
South. This makes the present value
of property and endowment in these
schools $48.000.000.

Sorority Gossip
Alpha Gamma, of Phi Mu, held its
annual initiation the evening of March
4. A banquet followed in the private
dining room of the Tutwiler Hotel,
with Miss Thelma Bates acting as
toastmistress.
The table was centered with a large
basket of roses and white carnations,
carrying out both the eorority colors
and flower.
Dainty place cards marked the
places of the Initiates, Misses Blvien
Autrey, Bess Fftmey, Sarah Fawsett,
Estelle Harrell, Willie Gibbs and Lu¬
cille Higgins, the active chapter and
members of the Birmingham Alum¬
nae Association.

DIVINITY CLUB
The Divinity Club met March 2. It
being a business meeting, everyone
was anxious that the meeting be
short. But before the meeting was
over, Dr. - Whet- — come in, and as
soon as the business was dispatched
with, the floor was turned over to
him. In giving instruction to the
young preachers, he told them not to
be afraid to think, be often in prayer,
practice fellowship, be careful with
finance and live a moral life. — Re¬

young Lamhdin Union. Their report
for March the first entitled them to a
percentage of 94, which was far ahead
of that of I. X. L., their nearest rivals,
with 63 per cent.
This union was organised In Septem¬
ber and after a few months of strug¬
gle it has rounded out Into a thor¬
oughly compact, enthusiastic and con¬
