Dogs whip Cats in first round
By Andy Parrish
Sports Editor
While most in Alabma
were concerned over the
Iron Bowl and the "state
championship," the
Samford Bulldogs were
knocking out the Uni¬
versity of New Hamp¬
shire Wildcats in search
of a national champion¬
ship.
The J3ulldogs beat the
Wildcats 29-13, with a
strong effort from run¬
ning back Tank
Edwards and yet an¬
other great game by the
Samford defense.
Edwards ran for 114
yards and two touch¬
downs. His counterpart,
Barry Bourassa, who
came into the game av¬
eraging 102 yards per
game, was held to 55 score of the Alabama- vances to the quarter-

Any doubts New Hampshire may have had about how to spell
"Samford" were erased after Saturday.
Second Round: Bulldogs vs. Dukes
Now it's on to Virginia,
where the 11-1 Bulldogs
will face the 9-3 Dukes
of James Madison Uni¬
versity.
JMU advanced to the
quarterfinals by defeat¬
ing the University of
Delaware 42-35 in
double overtime.
Once again, Satur¬
day's game will feature
one of the nation's most
explosive offenses
against one of the top
defenses. JMU finished
the season as the 16th
best scoring offense,
scoring almost 32 points
per game. The Bulldogs
were sixth in scoring
defense, giving up less
than 14 points per game.
JMU is coached by Rip
Scherer, a former offen¬
sive coordinator under
Bill Curry at the Uni¬
versity of Alabama.
Scherer is in his first
season as a head coach.
JMU is primarily a
running team, led by
junior tailback Kenny
Sims. Sims has rushed
for 1,352 yards in 12
games, and finished the
season 11th in the na¬
tion in rushing yards.
The winner will play
next week against the
winner of Youngstown
State and top-ranked
Nevada-Reno.
