“HURRAY FOR HOWARD”
Hut’s my good word for the week
to. all of you fabulous students
who have given life to a wonder¬
ful new achooL Never could I ex¬
pect to see. so many winsome
people in any school.
That’s just what was telling the
Major Monday before he went
into a crowded chapel room to
address us. Then when he read
the letter from the News about
the perfect record we have on
the honor system with the papers
left on our campus, I knew every¬
one should give a’UURRAY FOR
HOWARD.”
Saw the Delta Zetas entertaing
rushees at a “school daze" supper
party Monday night Soon after
the ADPis invited me over to the
Auxiliary Room for a Circus
Party. Brother let me tell you
now, I have never seen so many
good-looking girls.
Haven’t seen too many of you
at Morning Worship or at Vesper
lately. Now, listen to your friend
and mark my advice, always in¬
clude these short periods in ev¬
eryday’s busy hustle and bustle.
The clock told me the other day
that a pharmacy student Jack
Woods, won the title of "Mr. Ala¬
bama” at a YMCA physique con¬
test Just goes to show, I say, that
there are more to those boys and
girls over there than pills and
prescriptions.
Well, Dr. Acton, how does it
feel to be a new grandfather!
What a beam when you told the
good news — many congratula¬
tions!
The Phi Mus had as their guests
last night, sisters Trom their chap¬
ter at the U. of A. I pointed my
tip higher and higher as they
complimented our new home.
My LABOR OF LOVE award
this week goes to Mrs. Lena Davis,
Part of the power on the throne.
Her tireless efforts and deep love
of our campus has kept her busy
night and day working for a big¬
ger and better Howard. We all
love you and thank you, Mrs.
Davis.
Heard eae giggling girl ask how
a steeple could writea newspaper
column and still stay aloft Well,
youngun, this voice of the steeple
written by me and only me.
•fust remember, strange things
happen in dark and ghostly
hours of the wee morning (when
the CRIMSON is usually written).
Max Gartmaa, Crimson Sports
Editor, was privileged last Mon¬
day night to ning for the Birming¬
ham Women of the Banquet of
«5
year at the Hotel Thomas
Jefferson.
Max filled the hotel’s ball room
with his tenor voice by singing
Deep In My Heart" from the
Student Prince and “Be My Love”
from the Toast of New Orleans.

5U Start Campaign*
dor CL* Chction
by Sue Morton
The eyes of the whole campus will be on the Freshman Class
the next four weeks as they elect their officers October 28 to lead
them this year.
This year the Freshman elec¬
tion is under the leadership of
the Sophomore Class and spon¬
sored by the Senate. It is hoped
that the Freshman will take a
big part in this election and show
the upperclassmen some of that
Freshman spirit and energy.
All nominations for the differ¬
ent officers must be in Mr. Mar¬
tin's office by October 18th and
must be signed by five freshmen.
There are six officers to be filled.
These offices are: president, vice
president, secretary, treasurer,
and one senator.
Election day is one month away
but there is lots to be done before
then. Posters, handbills, etc., will
flood Howard's campus these
next weeks. The posters must be
put on bulletin boards or taked
on the grass. They cannot be
taped on the windows and must
be taken down by midnight, Oc¬
tober 25. The election booth will
be open all day October 28th in
the Administration building for
the voting.
Any freshman who wants to
run for one of these offices is
urged to get busy. If you aren’t
campaigning for an officer, get to
work for your favorite candidate.
Let Howard College always re¬
member this Freshman election
as the biggest ever. ,

Distinguished Profs
Brighten Howard’s Faculty
Roster
by Tom Cleveland
Perhaps you have paused while
walking by the Music Depart¬
ment to stop and stare at How¬
ard's new band director, and
try to remember where you saw
him before this year. He is Mr.
Bill Nugent, and you probably
have seen him on television. He
has appeared twice on Ed. Sul¬
livan’s Show. Bill went into show
business upon graduating from
S.M.U. in 1954. He has perform¬
ed in road showB with Pat Boone
and other performers of like tal¬
ent Before coming to Howard
he directed the famed S.M.U.
“Mustang” band.
Mrs. E. C. McDonald starts her
first year as mdth instructor at
Howard this semester. She comes
from the University of Louisville,
where she held the same position.
Mrs. McDonald attended Kansas
State College from 1934 to 1947,
with “many interruptions.” The
fact, that she holds membership
in national math, psychology, and
drame fraternities, gives one an
insight into her fine personality.
Mr. Hazel Grove comes to the
Chemistry Department after serv¬
ing in the U. S. Department of
Agriculture’s Food and Drug
Commission. He graduated from
Howard, where he established a
fine record in football a swell as
scholarship.
Mrs. Juanita Horton comes to
the Howard College of Pharmacy
on an American Foundation for
Pharmaceutical Education Fellow¬
ship.
She graduated from Howard
last year, but has done other
work at U. of Ala.
Other additions to our faculty
are: Martha Brown, who will be
teaching English; Mr. Warren
Mus grove from the Birmingham
Post Herald, who will be teach¬
ing journalism; and Mrs. Jane
Yates, who has an MJ3. in. Bi¬
ology and a BA. in psychology.
She will be teaching biology.
We are proud of the additions
to our faculty and we hope they
will come to love Howard as well
as we do.
