Howard Plays Louiaianians to Stand Practice on Open Field Tackling

Heavy Attack. This Week,
BAPTISTS GET FIELD GOAL.
Two hundred and twenty pounds

backfleld men In the fourth quarter

In the game against Tulane Univer¬
sity, at New Orleans, last Saturday.
The battle ended — Tulane 32; How-
arrd 3. ,,4y .
Howard's 156-pound average war¬
riors held the hea/y Louisianians to
13 to $ for three quartern, then
crumpled before a fast and furlour
backfleld attack. Howard ecored In
tbe third quarter, Captain Black

goal from the
thirty-six yard line.
When the fourth quarter began
Tulane took advantage of ita twenty-
pound overweight average and began
to smash her heavy backs against
Howard's light and fagged line. Tu¬
lane wound up the quarter with three
mfore touchdowns to her credidt.
Cecil Tiadale, former Howard Col¬
lege athlete and now a student In the
Medldca^ Depart m«nt of Tulane Uni¬
versity, umpired the. game. •
The following is the account of. the
game. In -part, aa given in The Ndw
Orleans Times- Picayune of Sunday:
Having always an edge on Howard
It did not require phenomenal ability
for Tulane to overcome the sturdy
defense that vainly tried to stem the
tide of battle. There were times
when Tulane waa held; and other
times, more frequently, when the
Olive and Blue rallied and beat back
the Howard attack. Fumbles helped
the visitors In more than one In¬
stance, and took some of the ginger
ftom the eleven that *t«s directed
by Captain Mallhea. i , '
Tulane Plays line Game.
All-around playing of the Tnlanr
squad was the Mg feature of the
game. Well-drilled, and playing
better ball than at any other time
this season, Tulane showed class
enough for her
ЬасЦега
to declare
that there was a chance after all tor
her to beat Louisiana State Univer¬
sity. Tulane showed about as well
on the defensive aa on the offensive,
excepting the great work in tbe laat
few minutes of the game.
With Captain Matlhea, Rosenthal
and Blanchard as Individual bright
lighta for Tulane, Coach Bhaugnesay’a
team developed strength to win, with
considerable reeerve power. Aa a
leader, Captain Mallhea Justified his
trust by playing a great all-around
game. His offensive playing was re¬
sponsible for many gains, and he was
a tower of strength In the secondary •
defense. Twice “Pete" waa all but
out, but with tears In his eyes he
declared that he wasn’t kart, and
continued, always Improving aa the
play continued.
Rosenthal should be given credit
with injecting a world of "pep" Into
tbe game. “Rosy" played great ball,
his line work drawing cheers time
and again. Whet Tulane had the
ball, Rosenthal proved a demon In
opening holes through which the
backs plunged, with yards for their
trouble.
Blanchard's work waa surprising.
On the line he did very well, and to
the last period, when George wa’
taken out and he went to Jett half-
back, the, boy from White Caatle
played his brat ball of the season.

TO PLAY THANKSGIVING.
Hard practice on open-field tack¬
ling featured Monday’s workout of
the Howard College football eleven.
According to Coach Eugene Caton,
the Howard backs were weak to

department in the game with Tulane
University.
Six days’ practice this week and
two days next week will wind np
practice for this season. The laat
gMme ol the season will be played
Thanksgiving with Spring Hill Col¬
lege, at Mobile.
Last year Howard came out vic¬
torious in a hard fought game with
spring Hill by the score of 16 to *J
Sprang Hill lost Its star of that game
In Ducete, who la at Auburn this
ytay. Howard loat her star of the
game in Robinson. Spring Hill h->
a light team, but one of the fastest
backflelc s to the State.
Indies dona point to a hard fought
game with the Mobile eleven. Early
to the season Tulane was victorious
over Spring Hill by the score of 36
to 13. Last Saturday Howard low
to Tulane 32 to 8. In the game laat
Saturday, however, luck played in
Tulane’* favor and in tbe Tulane-
Spring Hill game, luck favored the
latter, according to Tulane student*
who saw both game*.
“We are not going to take any
chances with the 8prtng Hill bunch.”
said Couch Caton. ‘‘These last tea
day# of practice will be tbe hardest
of the season with the 'Vanity and
the felkiws cannot loaf If they want
to win the last game on our sched¬
ule."
