exercises. President James M. Shel¬
burne made this announcement
through the Birmingham daily news¬
papers late last week.
It Is to be the first time In the his¬
tory of Howard College In the seventy-
five years that commencement ad¬
dresses have been delivered, that a
woman e to speak before the out-going
Senior class. The more interest Is
attached to the announcement that
Mrs. Mathis will speak elnce the May
Commencement is to serve as a sea¬
son for jubilee to commemorate the
seventy-fifth anniversary of Howard
College.
Mrs. Mathis lives at Gadsden and
within the last few years has achieved
a national reputation as a lecturer on
economic subjects. She is said to pos¬
sess a remarkable personality, to have
unusual oratorical ability and to be
well versed in economic subjects as
they relate to the South.
Other features of commencement in
the hands of President Shelburne are
expected to be announced within the
next few weeks. At a recent meeting
of the Executive Committee of the
faculty steps were taken toward mak¬
ing definite preparations for the jubi¬
lee celebration.

Robert Lawrence, Director of this
Howard College Glee Club, has con¬
sented to take charge of the directing
the Birmingham Male Chorus
which was organized this week at the
T. B. Cable HaO. This ehorus is to be a
combination of all the singing and mu¬
sic clubs in the district and will con¬
sist of about 600 voices. Howard Glee
Club Is one of the organization»
which wi^l form the nucleus of the-
male, chorus. Some of the other or¬
ganization» which will take part in
the chorus are: Arion Club, T.

Male Choree, and the Glee Clubs of
Birmingham College and Ensley and
Central and Bessemer High Schools.
It fs the purpose of the new organ¬
ization to give a series of open-air
concerts In Capitol Park during the
summer months, and instead of the
expense bping taken care of by a few
individuals It will be taken care of by'
the community.
